Signing in always takes two steps. First you prove who you are with Google or with your email and password. Then you confirm it's you with a second factor: a passkey, a code from an authenticator app, or one of your recovery codes. This is the same on every plan.

> **Note:** LightInventory is in development and not yet generally available. This page describes sign-in as designed. Step-by-step screenshots are added as each screen ships.

1. Open the sign-in page and select **Continue with Google**, or enter your email and password and select **Sign in**.
2. On the **Confirm it's you** screen, select **Use a passkey** and follow your browser's prompt.
3. To use another method, select **Use another method**, then **Use your authenticator app** or **Use a recovery code**.

Google sign-in counts as the first factor only, never as both. Even after you sign in with Google, LightInventory asks for your second factor.

## Passwords

- Use 12 to 128 characters. Spaces and any symbols are allowed, and there are no rules about mixing letters, numbers and symbols.
- Passwords are checked against lists of breached passwords. If yours appears in a known breach, choose a different one.
- Password managers and pasting work on every sign-in field.

If you forgot your password, see [Reset your password](/help/account-and-sign-in/reset-password).

## Your first sign-in

New accounts with an email and password confirm the email address first. After that, a setup wizard asks for three things before you can use the app:

1. A passkey.
2. A second method: another passkey, for example on your phone or a hardware security key, or an authenticator app.
3. Your 10 recovery codes, which you save before you continue.

Every user keeps at least two sign-in methods, so losing one device does not lock you out of your account. Learn more about [passkeys](/help/account-and-sign-in/passkeys), the [authenticator app](/help/account-and-sign-in/authenticator-app) and [recovery codes](/help/account-and-sign-in/recovery-codes).

Sign-up is not open yet. Join the waitlist on our [home page](/) and we will email you when it opens.

## Wrong attempts and privacy

The sign-in screens never tell anyone whether an account exists for an email address. A failed sign-in says only that the email and password did not work.

After 10 failed second-factor attempts, sign-in is locked for a while. The delay starts at 30 seconds and grows up to 1 hour, and the screen shows how long to wait.
